EPA PIPELINE
The Environmental Protection Agency has settled an administrative case against Houston-based Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. and its paren company, Tenneco, for releases of toxic polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) compounds at 42 pipeline compression stations in nine states. The company will pay a $6.4 million civil penalty as well as cleanup costs and will conduct future monitoring at the affected locations in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. The company had used PCB-based lubricants in its air compressor systems along the pipeline since the mid-1950s - long before the threats of PCBs were well-documented. The EPA began regulating the use and disposal of PCBs in 1978 and 1979, but the contamination at these sites has persisted.
